This magnificent, masterfully sculptured piece of bronze shows the legendary bearded hero with a lion skin draped over his left arm and holding in his hand three of the golden apples from the garden of the Hesperides, his 11th labour. According to the legend, they were given to him by Eurystheus as a token of gratitude for the lot he delivered him. Heracles in turn offered them to the goddess Athena, who returned them to the Hesperides.
