Attic black figure oinochoe

Burnt earthenware.

Attic, 6th century BC.

Height: 23cm.

Condition: Put together from fragments but complete.

Extremely rare Attic black figure trefoil oinochoe showing a palaestra scene with two akontists and a discobolos. Sgraffito at the base. Assigned to the Class of London B495.

Only two other BF oinochoae with palaestra scenes are recorded: a) -the white-gound oinochoe Louvre F 162, showing judge with two pairs of wrestlers. ABL 214, 183; pl. 25, 7. Mertens, AWG, 71, no. 25 and b) -an oinochoe by the Athena Painter, in Durham (N.C.), Duke University 1969.4 showing boy, jumper, and youth. Mertens, AWG, 73, no. 68. Provenance: Collection Dr. Arnold RĂ¼esch (1882-1929). The collection was sold at Galerie Fischer, Lucerne, on September 1, 1936. The present oinochoe was lot nr. 3 in the catalogue.
