Travertine
Roman Period, ca. 2nd/3rd century AD
H. 16cm; W. 8.5cm
A charming bust of a veiled female, likely a ritual offering; possibly Nabatean.
Almond-shaped eyes, pronounced cheekbones, a strong nose, bulging lips and a heavy chin characterize the finely modeled, oval female face. There is an engraved fold of Venus on the neck. A diadem adorns the figure’s forehead. A veil that reaches below the shoulders covers the head. The ears disappear completely under the headdress.
Condition: Overall good and complete. In places rubbed off, minor bruises and tension cracks. The tip of the nose missing.
Provenance: ex. collection of Ambassador G.P., Nr. 395, before 1965
Item reference: CL0477
